At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, the guns of World War I fell silent at last.
King George V of Britain called for a national day to honor the fallen in 1919 with two minutes of silence at 11 AM on November 11th. Originally called Armistice Day, after World War II, it became known as Remembrance Day in Britain and Europe, and Veterans' Day in the United States. It honors all military personnel who died in conflicts around the world and asks that we reflect on a peaceful future.
Poppies are often worn throughout the month of November after the World War I poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
Let us take a moment to reflect on the sacrifices of our brave soldiers, and to honor their memory.
