In 1964, President Johnson named February American Heart Month, urging the nation to take care of its heart health after the first CPR training in 1960. The American Heart Association urges everyone to learn CPR to save lives.

Nearly a million people die from cardiovascular disease in the United States per year, accounting for 1 in 3 deaths. It is the leading cause of death in the United States. Currently, 1 in 20 adults have coronary heart disease.

Across the country, someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds, 805,000 people per year. Performing CPR on someone in cardiac arrest can double or even triple the chances for survival.
